As some of you may know, Bluerainbow Online provides BDI Penny for Your Soul: Joan of Arc #1 exclusive covers, drawn by Eric Basaldua and colored by Nei Ruffino. While Nei was working on these, I got commissioned to color one variant of this cover too. It was not for publishing purposes, just a private commission. I really like the way it turned out :-) Enjoy!

Joan of Arc isn't amazing enough as she really was, you had to turn her into a nude model as well?

Joan of Arc was a French national heroine who expelled foreign invaders and who died a Catholic martyr. She was not a pin-up model.

Sorry if that offends you, Gordon. If that maybe be any consolation, it is not this Joan.

Joan of Arc is Big Dog Ink comic book character. It's not the historical Joan.

It's funny you and Nei Ruffino both work on the same projects ...because your color work totally reminds me of her work. I don't know how you two do it, but your palettes and color style are SO SIMILAR! It's frighteningly similar IMO. You both are amazingly talented, I wish I knew how to color like that! :)

I noticed it too. We both like art nouveau and I learned a lot from Nei's livestreams, maybe that's why. Still trying to paint in a different way though, Nei is only one :-)

Yeah, the livestream is something I need to find time to watch too. She's awesome for showing other artists how she works. It's not often you meet an artist willing to show others her style and technique. She has a great spirit and a generous heart for teaching others what she knows.

You guys both do amazing work! I guess you just need to find your own "flavor" so your style doesn't start to look too much like hers? I'm quite jealous, I'd love to be able to color as well as you do. Keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing more from you. :)

I think my style won't start to look too much like hers. The fact is, that when it comes to coloring you don't have a big choice - there are some standards you have to meet and if you look at other famous colorists' works - Peter Steigerwald for example - you will probably notice the similarities too, although obviously Peter is much better than me. But when it comes to drawing, it's totally different story, fortunately :-)

Oh yeah, I'm sure you're right, that it won't look too much like hers. We all put our own personal flavor and spin into what we do. :) A couple of the images in your gallery, upon browsing, made me do a double take because I thought for a moment that they where Nei's. lol But upon closer look doesn't look quite like it, as you put your own flavor into what you do. If you have any tips for a fellow colorist, feel free to send them my way! :) I'm always looking to grow, learn, and improve.

:-) Tips, tips... let me think. Apart from practicing and color theory, I try to go for realistic textures - for skin, hair, fabrics, etc. But that doesn't mean putting textures on overlay mode, but painting these elements in way that they look realistic. I don't think it's very "comic styled", but I always liked realism. And try to avoid lot of saturated colors, rather play with various levels of saturation. But you're dealing with colors quite well, for what I saw in your gallery :-)

Awesome! Great tips! And yeah, I totally need to learn how to paint textures in. I need to find some good brushes for textures, as I'm sure that helps a lot. I've tried adding some textures in with a flat image but by the time you're done moving, warping, skewing, and fussing with the texture so that it looks more natural I would have saved time just painting the danged texture in ..and it would probably look better too. lol If you have any suggestions on good texture brushes I'm all ears ..er eyes.

And thank you for the compliment on my colors! :) That's sweet of you. I do tend to be a bit saturated with my colors, and I probably need to "tone it down" for more natural looks. But I guess it depends on the image. More stylized comic-booky images can probably stand for more saturation and more painted type art could use a more realistic approach with less saturation.

Again, great tips! Thank you, sinhalite! I appreciate you taking the time to help out and give advice. :excited:

@sinhalite...for clarification, this pic was for a "private commission"? In any regards, I got lucky and found a copy of this comic with this pic on Ebay and it is absolutely stunning...maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to have it autographed and rated by CGC. Thanks for sharing your artistry with us.

That was done for Brett Cate, the copy you bought was official version colored by Nei Ruffino. Or at least it should be, because this one was not published.
